What Have I learnt So Far?

So far I have learnt about EDM/Electronic Dance Music and its Sub-genres

I have also learnt how to analyse an EDM track by comparing their beats and how their artists interpret their own music

This impacts the next stage of my coursework because, the information form the EDM research will help me to understand how to present my work, to make my front cover and double page spread look as accurate as possible towards the genre.

My thoughts on this are:

This Genre surprised me because, i would never have known that there could have been so many sub-genres, to a Niche genre. Also learning about which artists fall into UK Garage and EDM, was also interesting. Because some of them you would not normally associate with this kind of music

UK Garage - Sub-Genre Prezi Analysis

this is a prezi analysis of UK garage sub-generes and what they consist of. This will be useful to my magazine, because it will allow me to mix and match different parts of UK garage and EDM together to hopefully attract a wider audience when marketing my magazine

Competitor Research Wordle

This is a Wordle, that contains the names of the main competitors in my Niche Genre.
I will use this to help me compare the key elements of each magazine, in order to improve my own
By completing this task, I have learnt that each of these magazines have Unique Selling Points, to attract their customers, such as: large photos, interviews with famous artists and additional features, that are in every issue and hopefully I could use some of these in my own creation.

Simple Mind Genre Insights

This is a mind map, which I created using simple mind. it provides a basic insight into a few major music genres, and how each genre could possibly influence my future ideas when producing other forms of media. We look into music genres in order to distinguish the differences between certain genres, which means when I write my magazine, I will be able to write more accurate and detailed information on my genre, to reel my audience in.

Below are images which I feel relate to each Genre and their conventions:

Rock:

This image is iconic because, one of the most popular icons, Jimmy Hendrix, is playing the electric guitar, which is a main figure associated with the rock genre.

Hip-Hop:

This image is iconic because, Hip-Hop music originated from Black culture in the 1970's in downtown New York in the Bronx as a way of spreading their issues with racism and life in the suburbs.

Dance:

This image is iconic because, we see the DJ clearly controlling the music and the crowd being involved at the event dancing to the music.

Garage:

This image is iconic because, Garage musics roots stem from freestyle and off the cuff productions made by amateurs and their friends.

secondary and tertiary audiences

Secondary EDM Audience

Trance music originated in the 1990's in Germany

Common features of trance music are beats ranging between 125bpm to 150bpm. Trance music often consists of long beat sequences leading up to large drop and swift change in music style, picking up the tempo as the 'chorus' develops, before dropping back down to the slower 'verse'. There are often very little lyrics in the verses, often one verse repeated over and over again throughout the song and the chorus is the climax of the re-occuring beat and verses.

Tertiary EDM Audience

Progressive dance originated in the early 1990's rave and underground club scene in the United Kingdom.

Common features of trance music are extremely similar to that of EDM, it contains similar beat ranges of between 125bpm to 150bpm. It too consists of long consistent beats before a swift change into a more upbeat drop, representing the songs main chorus. Likewise, there are very little lyrics and often only one verse on repeat throughout.

I have created this presentation using IMovie, as this allows me to portray my images and at the same time, provide a taster of this genre by adding music.
I have learnt about the major iconography of this genre, as shown in the images that i have selected.
Hopefully this will provide you with a sense of what this genre of music has to offer.

What Have I Learnt So Far?

So far I have learnt about different music genres, and what kinds of music falls into a genre.

I have also learnt how to analyse a magazine by comparing their similarities and differences, and how to identify a magazines unique selling point and target audience.

In addition to magazines, I have also learnt how to Analyse films.

What do I mean by this: Who made the film?, Who stars in the film?, Who directs the film?, How much does it cost to produce the film?, How successful was the film?

Finally, I have learnt the 4 key concepts of Media, which are:

Audience, who is the film or magazine aimed towards?
The form or type of media, is the topic a magazine or a film?
The media's institution, which company or organisation produced the media work?
How the media is represented, how can this piece of media be interpreted, by the general public?

This impacts the next stage of research because the information from the key concepts, will help me to understand my target audience better and establish their needs and wants more clearly.

My thoughts on this are:

these facts did surprise me because, i would never have looked into this information in great detail, as it is not something that interests me a great deal. But i have enjoyed finding out information about music genres, that i may never had thought of researching previously.

Genre Research Using Canva

This is a canva, which explains why it is important to research into a genre that you believe you are  publishing a music magazine on and about.

Also, depending on what genre of music I choose, will determine what style my magazine will be based around. For example, if I were to make a DJ magazine, I can't stage my front cover in a barn, because then the cover will look like a country music magazine.

This is also applies to content of the magazine, because if i were to make a rock music magazine but I have a main article with a jazz singer, then this will be misleading to the buyers of my magazine, because they will be purchasing a copy and anticipating to read rock stories and articles.

Mass Music Genre Wordle

This is a Wordle of different Niche Genres of music. By completing this wordle, I have gained a new insight into a wider spectrum of Music Genres. The point of this wordle is to understand which is the most popular music genre. This is useful because, it allows me to figure out how to sell more magazines to a wider audience. Even though classical is a large genre, it would not be used in my magazine, due to the fact it is somewhat different and doesn't overlap with any of the other main Genres. Making a wordle is useful because they provide an interesting image of information, rather than reading off of a page. Although, they can be somewhat innacurate, because certain people may like more than one genre.

This impacts my ideas about future music magazine genres because, it allows me to look back in order to help me choose which genre I wish to base my magazine on, in order to attract a Niche audience.

Magazine Publishing Quizlet

This a quizlet, that i have made on Diamond Publishing and IPC Media, who have both contributed in producing the renowned music magazine Record Collector.

By researching about these publishers and their successful magazine, I have learnt that in order to produce a successful magazine, you need to target a market, that has little competition. This allows your magazine to stand out to buyers, and makes your magazine more likely to be consumed.
